Impacted Wisdom Teeth and Alveolectomy

In certain cases, a wisdom tooth cannot fully erupt because it is being blocked by other teeth in the dental arch. This causes gum inflammation and the formation of a periodontal pocket in which food gets stuck and rots, increasing the bacterial count and further intensifying the inflammation.

An impacted wisdom tooth needs to be extracted. The alveolar ridge sometimes blocks access to the tooth, so the dental surgeon must perform alveolectomy, an excision of a portion of the dentoalveolar process.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia and the length of the recovery period varies depending on the severity of the extraction. Following the extraction of a mandibular wisdom tooth, it can last up to five days. It is sometimes necessary for the patient to take antibiotics and analgesics prior to the surgery.
