Ceramic Crowns and Bridges

Ceramic crowns are fabricated in dental laboratories after taking impressions of prepared teeth. Materials of which crowns and bridges could be made are zirconia fused to ceramic or IPS e.max non-metal ceramics.
Ceramic crowns fabricated from full, non-metal ceramics are the most beautiful dental crowns, as they perfectly imitate the natural translucence of a tooth. Natural tooth color affects the choice of the crown color.
These crowns are the best choice for those allergic to metals.
Regarding the composition of the material, there are several types of ceramic crowns:
- Feldspathic porcelain – classic and the most beautiful, it is used exclusively for making veneers
- Reinforced glass-ceramics – leucite-reinforced (Empress), lithium-disilicate-reinforced (IPS e.max Press, IPS e.max CAD) and glass-reinforced ceramics (In Ceram Spinell, In Ceram Alumina). These materials are used to make inlays, onlays, dental veneers and ceramic caps and they are all made using CAD-CAM technology (Computer Aided Design – Computer Aided Manufacture).
- Aluminum oxide and zirconium oxide non-metal ceramics – some of the strongest types of non-metal ceramics. They are suitable for producing crowns and bridges in the back region of the mouth, which is exposed to stronger masticatory forces. Such crowns include the Nobel Procera Alumina, Nobel Procera Zirconia, IPS e.max ZirCAD and Lava Zirconia. They are also produced using CAD-CAM technology.
Benefits of ceramic crowns
- Transparency and translucence of the natural tooth, maximum esthetics
- No allergic reactions, high degree of biocompatibility and reduced sensitivity
- Ability to correct the position, shape and color of teeth
Limitations of ceramic crowns
- Complex and time-consuming tooth preparation
- Relatively expensive
- Strong chewing can lead to chipping and breaking
Ceramic bridge
A ceramic bridge is a dental construction consisting of two or more dental crowns used for replacing irreversibly missing teeth. Sanja Vuic Private Dental Practice will recommend placing a dental bridge only in cases in which a badly destructed tooth crown (large fillings or a non-vital tooth) is positioned next to a toothless gap. In all other cases, we will recommend placing a dental implant in order to preserve the neighboring teeth.
Ceramic bridges are made from the latest dental materials, such as zirconia-ceramics (IPS e.max ZirCAD), using CAD-CAM technology.

- Extremely strong material (“white iron”)
- Highly resilient to wear
- Translucent (imitates the natural tooth well)
- Biocompatible
- No dark rims like on metal-ceramic crowns
Limitations of ceramic bridges
- Relatively expensive, but considered a good investment given the durability of the work!
